Once again, flowers aren’t always the answer. This mid-summer wedding reception was perfect without a flower in sight. Long farm tables with hundreds of pillar candles lining the centers. A perfect example of what happens when you CUT out the extras. Sorry, I couldn’t resist! Besides, don’t we always look better in candlelight? Just sayin.
Boutonnières are often such an afterthought. It seems that so much time and attention go into the bride’s bouquet and the rest of the flowers in a wedding, that when it comes time to consider the boutonnières the creative juices have run dry. This, I would venture to say, is probably why the boutonnière tends to be comprised of something that either matches the bride’s bouquet or goes with the ‘color scheme’ (my thoughts on the color scheme concept in a future post). It is simply easier to come up with something that just goes and doesn’t really fit. So here is an idea for a boutonnière that is simple and unique, masculine in a pretty way and there’s not a flower to be seen. A fern tendril and twist of lily grass with satin ribbon to finish it off.
I’ve never been a lover of sunflowers. Wait, to be more accurate, I’ve never been a lover of sunflowers as cut flowers. I really like them in fields, on farms, in peoples’ yards, in time-lapse videos as they follow the sun with their ‘faces.’ But in floral designs they just seem to be out of their element. But I’m beginning to have a change of heart. I’ve discovered I like them in certain contexts, particularly in a monochromatic mix of yellows/oranges. This design was created for a small dinner party at Osteria Via Stato, a rustically elegant Italian restaurant in River North, and I think the little yellow and orange cheerful arrangements have altered my previously steadfast beliefs about these summertime beauties.
After much ado the website is here. It is still in it’s infant form, so there will be ongoing changes and lots of new photos coming. For now everyone, please check it out and tell me what you think. And, certainly, if you or anyone you know has a need for beautiful flowers you know who to come to!
